The Vincent Black Lightning is a legend among motorcycles. It was the fastest production motorcycle of its day, the first hand-built '48 Lightning hitting 150.313 mph at Bonneville Salt Flats. There were only ever 7000 twin-cylinder Vincents produced between the years 1939 and 1955. In 1950, a Black Shadow cost 00 - about half the average annual salary in the United States. There were only 33 Black Lightnings built in 1949, and today they could fetch well over 0,000.
Here are some interesting features of the Vincent Black Lightning and other Vincents:
Black & Decker Drill
The rear wheels were reversible, much like today's fixed gear track bicycles. This allowed for the rider to easily switch between two different rear drive ratios - one for the street, the other for racing. Additionally, the rear wheel could be removed without the use of any hand-tools, only streamlining the gear-changing process. Some Vincents had both right and left hand sidestands. You could use both together to act as a centerstand. Power was transferred to the drivetrain via a dual clutch system, as the conventional friction plate clutches of the period could not handle the torque of the Vincent 1000cc twin. Vincents have signature dual coil-over dampers that connect the rear section to the tank area. Front suspension is via Brampton girders. The Vincent offered twin front and rear drum brakes, the former of which were substantial enough to also be used on smaller British cars. They were 7" in diameter - by far the supreme motorbike brakes of their era.
Modern Vincent collectors claim that the power delivery of these bikes still does not disappoint. The bike can accelerate quickly from highway speed to 125 mph - performance that was nothing short of mythic at the time.
Newer motorcyclists have been introduced to the Vincent legend from whispered rumors, repeated reference by Hunter S. Thompson, and of course the amazing song by Richard Thompson, which goes:
"Says James, 'In my opinion, there's nothing in this world beats a '52 Vincent and a red-headed girl. Now Beezers, Triumphs, and Nortons won't do. They don't have a soul like a Vincent '52."
