Have you ever heard of gunwood? Chances are you have and you just didn't know it. Gunwood is actually another name for American black walnut wood. Sometimes it is referred to as gunwood because it is the standard wood used for gunstocks in the United States. It is most popularly used for handles on shotguns and sporting rifles because it keeps its shape, is light weight, and absorbs recoil better than any other wood.
Botanically named Juglans Nigra, American black walnut is found throughout the eastern United States. The walnut tree reaches 100 feet in height with a diameter of 3 to 4 feet. The bark of the tree is thick and very dark brown. It is a strikingly beautiful wood. Its sapwood is nearly white and its heartwood is rich dark brown to purplish-black. In most cases, wood from less mature walnut trees has a chocolate-brown tint. The texture of walnut is moderately coarse, but uniform. It is usually straight grained, but sometimes its grains are wavy or curly.

"American black walnut wood is graded with knots and sap. So a clear grade will still have knots in it. This shows its natural beauty and adds character to the wood. It also has a variety in its coloring. When it is kiln dried, it will have more of a brown color. When it is air dried, it will have more of a purple color."
Along with its beauty, walnut also has great physical properties that make it a very popular wood. It is strong, stable, and durable. It has medium density, which helps make it tough and hard. With a Janka hardness of 1010, it is comparable to American Cherry. Walnut has average bending and crushing strengths. It also has high shock resistance and good steam bending qualities. Walnut heartwood is highly resistant to decay. It also works easily with hand and machine tools.
The qualities of American black walnut make it a perfect wood for many projects, not only gun handles. It is an excellent wood to use for cabinetwork, high quality furniture, boat building, and musical instruments. It is also used for paneling and veneers. Walnut wood excels in turning, molding, routing, and carving as well.
